Modest Mouse at Webster Hall (Photos)

Last night, Modest Mouse‘s tour stop at New York’s Webster Hall was the first of two sold-out shows there in support of their newest album, Strangers to Ourselves, the long-desired follow-up to 2007’s We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. I photographed the band for the Village Voice and my images went alongside Sean McCabe’s excellent review of the excellent performance. You can read the whole thing here.

However, when you read the article, you’ll only see a couple of images that I sent over, but I had a ton more worth sharing, so please take a look below for a colorful gallery of Isaac Brock and co.

Red Baraat’s 2015 Festival of Colors (Preview)

I’ve photographed Red Baraat several times in the past, including their past two Holi / Festival of Colors shows. The one in 2013 was at Webster Hall and those pictures are on PopMatters while the most recent New York City one was was held at the Highline Ballroom. The band liked my photos enough from the prior year that I shot that gig for Red Baraat which they then shared the pictures on their Facebook page. Their 2015 flyer features an image of mine from the Webster Hall gig. Tonight they will be performing at Brooklyn Bowl with Rupa & the April Fishes and the Brooklyn Raga Massive. I will be going tonight and once again taking pictures.

Of course, when photographing a full set from a band, you end up getting more shots than you end up using, so I thought why not revisit the past two years and see if I have any photo outtakes that were worth sharing. Check out a few from each show after the jump.

The Flaming Lips Cover Bowie’s “Warszawa”

At the 25th Annual Tibet House Benefit this year, The Flaming Lips were joined by Julianna Barwick for two songs. The first was a cover of The Beatles’ “She’s Leaving Home” and the second was of David Bowie’s “Warszawa”. Audio of the latter song has surfaced and is below while a full gallery is posted over at BrooklynVegan.

Danny Clinch – Walls of Sound Gallery

blog_danny_clinch_milk_00

Near the end of summer in 2014, I had the opportunity to interview esteemed music photographer Danny Clinch about his epic monograph Still Moving (Abrams) (which is available for purchase on Amazon). That interview is over at PopMatters. Then, a few weeks after, at the time of the book release, Clinch put together a party at the McKittrick Hotel where a lot of musicians came to pay their respects, many of whom sat in on a performance by the Tangiers Blues Band.

Clinch’s follow up project was a very limited edition book called Motor Drive, featuring artists and automobiles, as well as a gallery exhibit at Milk Studios with the opening night reception on March 3rd. The Milk Gallery website has some photos of the exhibition as well as a few words from the photographer about the process, “Clinch told Milk Made during the opening that this show, and it’s accompanying book release Still Moving, was something of an extreme labor of love. “I spent 25 hours on this wall alone” he says as he nods toward a gargantuan photo collage occupying the back wall of the Milk Gallery. “It’s been real great working on this show,” he continued, “it’s turning out better than I ever could have hoped for.” We had high hopes, but we couldn’t agree more.”

Torres on WNYC Soundcheck

Yesterday I dropped by the Greene Space for an afternoon taping of WNYC’s Soundcheck show hosted by John Schaefer with featured guest, Torres (the musician known as Mackenzie Scott). WNYC noted,  “With Sprinter, her second record (out May 5 via Partisan Records), Torres again finds fertility in juxtaposition, while mining her own biography and anxieties.”

WNYC taped the event and a stream is currently available. You can find the video and a couple of photos below the jump.
